Florida Medical Records Sold for Profit

data breachA former employee at Florida Hospital Celebration Health has been arrested by the FBI and charged with accessing over 760,000 patient records and selling some for profit.  After a ten-month investigation, the Bureau alleges that Dale Munroe, who worked as a registration representative in the emergency department, was able to access computer records from throughout the hospital and others in the Florida Hospital network, and primarily sought patients who had been involved in automobile accidents.

Some of these records, which he had been improperly accessing for over two years, were then sold to an agent soliciting for attorneys and chiropractors.  The data breach was discovered when a patient who had been involved in a motor vehicle accident received a call from someone who knew all about the accident; after a call was placed to the hospital, an investigation was begun.
