A: In the ICD-9 world a modifier is not linked to diagnosis, but usually linked to the (CPT® code (Current Procedural Terminology). For example modifier 59 is used to identify procedures/services that are commonly bundled together but are appropriate to report separately under some circumstances. A health care provider may need to use modifier 59 to indicate that a procedure or service was distinct or independent from other services performed on the same day. Modifier 51 to indicate that multiple procedures (other than E/M) were performed at the same session by the same provider. Then using the CPT code the Encoder Pro will give you which Modifier to use and other information like CCI and CMS. It should be noted that modifier can be changed by things such as whether it is on the left or right arm. If you use the diagnosis code on Encoder Pro it will tell you what it was in previous versions or any previous notes about the Modifier. Encoder Pro (like a utility for lookup) is not to be confused with Codes on Disk can be purchased as an add-on for $149.
