HIMSS Offers Mobile App Evaluation Guide

The Healthcare Information and Management Systems Society (HIMSS) has released a guide to assist healthcare IT departments with evaluating mobile application performance.  The guide is aimed primarily at small- to medium-sized healthcare providers.

The proliferation of mobile apps makes it difficult to find those that are useful, usable, and secure for medical facilities.  

AMA Alliance To Standardize Physician Data Reporting

The American Medical Association (AMA) announced yesterday that it has formed an alliance with over 60 organizations to help physicians better utilize payer-provided data reports.  The AMA created the Guidelines for Reporting Physician Data as part of the effort, with input from health insurers, medical societies, health standards organizations, and employer and consumer coalitions.

Patients Want Mobile Access

A survey by Accenture shows that patients are embracing eHealth and mobile options while still wanting the option to communicate in person with their physicians.  The online “Accenture Connected Health Pulse Survey” polled 1,100 U.S. residents earlier this year and illustrates that patients are “hungry for information.”

Most Hospitals Unprepared for Data Loss

A new report by BridgeHead Software suggests that a majority of hospitals have not prepared for a catastrophic data loss despite considering it a top priority.  The company surveyed 158 US and UK healthcare IT executives and found that almost 55% of the respondents listed backup/disaster recovery in their “top three” IT investment priorities for the next year.

Healthcare IT Spending Increasing Quickly

A recent report by NJ-based Insight Research Corporation projects that more than $69 billion will be spent on healthcare IT over the next six years.  The market research study predicts that spending on IT and telecommunications for healthcare will grow at a compounded rate of 9.7 percent annually between 2012 and 2017.

Also projected are a 16% increase in the number of healthcare locations and a healthcare employment rate expected to increase 250% faster than the U.S.
